The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is only a few miles drive from my house.
The Savannah NWR has become my family's home away from... well... home. Unfortunately, my family "lives" in a busy world full of schedules, classes, and workloads that could stress good-ol' patient Job to the nines.
We all often take a drive on an interstate, whether it be to work or what have you, and once we arrive at our destination we realize we don't remember the actual drive over. That's because we were on auto pilot. My family, now, likes to take that drive off of the interstate and on to a gravel path. Four miles: what would take three minutes to drive on the interstate, we draw out for an hour (at a minimum), as we enjoy the sights and sounds of birds that would never sully themselves by flying into the so-called "beautiful" city of Savannah and the regalia of the sly alligator as it meanders its way slowly thru the calm waters of the marsh. (It is as if each one of them seems to believe they each own the world.)
The beauty and majesty of the Savannah NWR is solely reflective of the splendor that is God. To witness His handiwork in an environment that is both tangible and unspoiled is to truly begin to appreciate all that is around us, the gifts that God has laid before our very eyes that we so often take for granted and allow to go completely unnoticed.
Genesis 1: 26 says, "Then God said, 'Let us make man...and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.'"
To see the beauty that God put in to one tiny little bird, such as the American Purple Gallinule, and then know that he holds me - "man" - over all these creatures... makes me feel loved,... cherished.
I'll close this little post with one of my favorite pictures of the ones I have taken at the Savannah NWR. I hope you like it as much as I do.
